Yes in hindsight i should have insisted on that. We were well into the project before I started thinking that the figures didn't add up. I asked to have a look at the next valuation. This was forwarded by the builder to the architect and he coulddn't even have bothered to look through it because there was so many things that were wrong. I'm now left out of pocket with a big mess. What sort of recourse do I have if I think my architect should take some responsibility here?

While this situation might arise in theory, the way to avoid it is to have the Architect calucate the valuations, instead of taking the builders world for it. One could also use a Quantity Surveyor to fulfill this role of providing independent valuations.

I was interested to read this post. What happens if the architect doesn't fulfill his role as Administrator. For example by not checking that the valuations from the builder are correct but instead just forwarding them on to the employer? Que massive problems for the employer when he discovers very far down the line that he has overpaid and cannot get the money back...

I am from Hong Kong and, interestingly, I've been wanting to be an architect since childhood. For many reasons, I did not get accepted by any architectural school. So, I studied journalism during my university time. After graduation, I've been working in my profession for 10 years, and now I am at the middle management, earning decent money.... so, my question is... am I satisfied? The answer is 'NO'.

This year, I start taking a Professional Diploma course in Architectural Studies (part-time course), I am not sure whether I am too old to 'pursue my dream', but i am working hard to realise my dream.

Just want to say, 'how to become an architect' is always the question in my head.

What do you think are the chances of a small Architectural Practice obtaining a commission to create a Great piece of Architecture?

Do you think that with the recession coming to and end that it is possible for Architecture to creep back into the budget?

Finally, I meet on an everyday basis Architects who think that everything they do is Architecture. It would be fair to say that most of them have never nor will they achieve much acclaim for their designs. I don't think that we should discourage this behavior as Design needs to be a focuse for Architects but surely some sense of realistic understanding of ones own design limitations should be recognised. I recently came accross an Architect who said that 'his work spoke for itself' yet he was very quiet in the dowturn and actually was a nobody.

Interesting! Intelligent principle! I am a non-UK architect (Belgium) with a very small practice. I however have been doing the publishing of my full fee "calculation" system since over 15 years allready, not on a website, just old fashioned printed on paper. I allways sent them, to inquiring potential clients. I could "survive" on my tine one-man practice, only because this "open-to-all" publishing allowed me to maintain high (=correct) fee scales. In fact, averaging higher then the far majority of my competing one-man architects practises. (They sometimes only charge 1/5 of my typical fees, but consequently offer a fraction of services they pretend to offer... (Like, NO practical problems or informational sustainment in head of the owners themselves, and typically, no involvement at all with finishing jobs.) Regarding time wasters: whatever the reason why oneone inquires and doesn't return (you often just don't know exactly why...) is about 2:3 , So, an average of 3 real inquiries lead to a project. Someone sending an email to (25 ?? lol ) architects with a question: "We have a plot of so-and-so, want a house with 3 bedrooms, so, Whats you fee and whats does cost such a house?".... I just DON'T answer at all. Those are a certain waste of time.

Another benefit of publishing fees is that it discourages clients, who cannot afford the Architect, from waisting their time. When I started out, I had had several potential clients invite me around to their home, we had a long discussion about what they want to achieve, only to find they cannot afford my fees or anything close to a realistic construction budget. Since I started publishing my fees on line, I get far fewer inquiries from time wasters.

Maybe a per square foot guideline price for high end , medium end budget etc. would help in the preliminary stages. I went to the bank for funding a while ago on the basis of outline plans that went with a plot sale and their surveyors used this method to make an assessment.
